Most of the cars sold in India are Front Wheel Drive (FWD). The fact is that most of the uncles that use their car on a daily basis don't know whether their car is FWD or RWD. all hatchbacks except the Tata Nano are FWD. and the cheapest RWD sedan you can buy in India is the BMW 3 Series. So what's the big deal about this RWD and FWD?? The FWD and RWD cars are way apart in terms of handling. they will never feel like the same. Since most of us drive around in a FWD car, it is important to learn and practice left foot braking in a manual.
What is Left Foot Braking?
As the name implies, it is nothing but using your left foot to operate the brake pedal. Left foot braking is a technique that is used by professional racers to set fastest lap times in a FWD car. but there are many reasons that you should be also doing left foot braking in a day to day basis. In a manual transmission, conventionally, people use their right foot to operate gas and brake while dedicating left foot for clutch operation. you need to break this habit.
Why Left Foot Braking?
In a FWD car, the front tyres are assigned with the task of steering, braking and pulling the vehicle. there is a heavy load on front tyres compared to rear tyres. For better steering and pulling, traction aka road grip plays a very important role. when you accelerate forward, the weight shifts from the front end to rear end, which reduces the grip on front tyres. for more grip, you need more weight on front tyres. when you enter a corner, if you trail brake, that is, if you keep applying brake till the apex of the corner, the front end will get more traction and will be easier to steer and pull the vehicle. if you use your left foot for trail braking and simultaneously apply gas, you will come off the corner faster.
How to Left Foot Brake
The trick can be mastered only by practice and experience. Next time you enter a corner, try to brake late using your left foot. you should be able to keep applying brake pressure without stopping the car till the mid corner. at the same time, this will shift the centre of gravity of the car towards the front end. With more weight on the front, You will now be able to steer more precisely and apply slight throttle at the same time without understeering. when you have passed the mid corner or apex, lift off the brake pedal and apply full throttle. this is the fastest method for entering and exiting a corner in a FWD car.
